Bleisure: Turning Business Travel Into Weekend Getaways
The word is a portmanteau that the travel industry coined a few years ago, but the idea is older than that. You are already in the city. The flight is paid for. The conference ends Thursday afternoon. Why fly home Friday morning when you could stay through Sunday?
Bleisure travel, the practice of extending a business trip into a personal one, has grown steadily as remote and hybrid work have made the boundaries between work and travel more flexible. A survey by Expedia found that more than 60 percent of business travelers have added leisure days to a work trip at least once. The number is higher among people who travel frequently for work.
What makes it work
The economics are straightforward. The flight is the most expensive part of most trips, and it is already covered. Adding two or three nights to a hotel stay, or switching to a vacation rental for the weekend, costs a fraction of what a separate leisure trip would. If your company covers the flight and the first few nights, your personal cost is just the weekend accommodation and whatever you do with your time.
The logistics are also simpler than they used to be. Most booking platforms let you extend a stay with a few clicks. Vacation rentals are often cheaper per night than business hotels for longer stays, and they give you a kitchen and more space, which matters when you are not on an expense account.
Choosing the right destination
Not every business destination lends itself to a bleisure extension. The best ones have something worth staying for: a coastline, a food scene, a national park within an hour's drive, or a city centre that rewards walking. Belize, for example, has become a destination for regional business travel, and the combination of reef, jungle, and Mayan ruins makes it an easy place to justify an extra few days.
The practical question is whether you have someone to travel with or are comfortable going alone. Solo bleisure travel is common and well-supported by the industry. Many vacation rental companies, including Casago Belize, can arrange local recommendations and activities for guests arriving mid-week on short notice.
A few things to sort out before you go
Check your company's travel policy before extending. Some employers are fine with it; others require that personal days be clearly separated from business travel for expense purposes. If you are booking accommodation, make sure the checkout date on your business booking and the check-in date on your personal booking do not leave a gap. And pack accordingly: a suit and reef shoes in the same bag is a solved problem, but it helps to think about it before you leave.
The broader point is that business travel does not have to be purely transactional. The infrastructure is already in place. The only thing required is the decision to stay a little longer.
