When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The dry season runs from late November through April and is the most popular time to visit. Skies are clear, the reef is calm, and visibility for snorkeling and diving is at its best. December through March is peak season, particularly on Ambergris Caye and the Placencia Peninsula. The shoulder months of May and June are warm, less crowded, and offer good value. Lobster season opens in late June, drawing visitors to the cayes for the annual Lobster Festival. The rainy season runs from June through November, with the heaviest rainfall in September and October. Belize stays open year-round, and the jungle is at its most lush during the wet months. Rates are lower and the crowds are thinner.

Getting Here and Around

The Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City is the main entry point for international flights. Getting to the cayes or the south requires a connecting flight or a water taxi. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air operate scheduled domestic flights to San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and Dangriga. Water taxis run regularly between Belize City, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro. The crossing from the Marine Terminal to San Pedro takes around 75 minutes. On Ambergris Caye, golf carts are the main form of transport. In the Cayo District, a rental car gives you the most flexibility for reaching ruins, caves, and national parks.

Practical Notes

The Belizean dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2:1. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. The official language is English, making Belize one of the most accessible countries in Central America for English-speaking visitors. The country code is +501. Belize uses the same electrical outlets as the United States (110V, Type A/B plugs).
