Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich was a major Maya ceremonial centre during the Classic period, roughly 600 to 900 AD. At its peak the city was home to several thousand people and served as a regional political and religious hub. The site sits on a ridge above the Mopan River, with views across the valley into Guatemala.

The main structure, El Castillo, rises 40 metres above the plaza floor and was among the tallest buildings in Belize at the time of its excavation. A carved stucco frieze runs along the upper temple, depicting astronomical symbols and royal figures. It is one of the finest examples of Mayan decorative stonework in the country. A small museum at the site entrance provides context on the excavations and the people who built the city.

Getting there is part of the experience. A hand-cranked ferry crosses the Mopan River from the village of San Jose Succotz, and the ruins are a short walk uphill from the other bank. The site is well maintained and easy to explore independently, though guided tours are available and add considerable depth to the visit.
