Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan means 'little channel' in Mayan, and the name describes the reserve well: a natural break in the reef about 6 kilometres south of San Pedro. The channel funnels nutrient-rich water through the reef, which is why the marine life here is so dense. Established in 1987 as Belize's first marine reserve, Hol Chan covers roughly 18 square kilometres across four zones: the reef, the seagrass beds, the mangroves, and Shark Ray Alley.

Shark Ray Alley is the reserve's most visited spot. Nurse sharks and southern stingrays gather in shallow water where local fishermen once cleaned their catch. Snorkelers can wade in chest-deep water and watch them circle at close range. It is calm, clear, and accessible to swimmers of all levels, including children.

The reef zone holds moray eels, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and large schools of snapper and grunt. The seagrass beds shelter juvenile fish and the occasional manatee. Most tours from San Pedro combine both zones in a two-stop half-day trip, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding reef experiences in Belize.
